ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is continually evolving due to new and emerging resistance mechanisms, new test methods and new interpretive criteria (breakpoints). This session will introduce attendees to the basic principles behind breakpoints and review antibacterial breakpoints that have been updated in the last 10 years by CLSI. In addition, best practices for reporting AST results to maximize clinical impact will be discussed.

1:15 – 2:15       Understanding breakpoint updates: verification, validation, CAP and CLSI

2:15 – 2:30       Break

2:30 – 3:15       What is new for breakpoints in 2020?

3:15 – 4:00       How to add value to your AST reports in the bacteriology (and mycology!) laboratory

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The workshop will provide participants with the information that will allow them to:

1. Discuss breakpoints revised since 2010 by CLSI, including upcoming revisions in 2020

2. Prioritize breakpoint revisions within your institution

3. Apply selective antibiotic testing and report comments to enhance reports and stewardship

4. Develop a plan to update breakpoints on AST systems

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Romney Humphries is the Chief Scientific Officer at Accelerate Diagnostics, and a Professor of Pathology at the University of Arizona. She is highly regarded within the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases communities for her expertise, research, and contributions to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Romney’s research interests include everything antimicrobials—including evaluating resistance mechanisms, best practices for testing and developing and evaluating novel methods to assess antimicrobial susceptibility. She is published in more than 100 scientific peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Clinical Infectious Diseases and Journal of Clinical Microbiology. Additionally, she has been invited to speak at over one hundred academic workshops and scientific conferences around the world. Dr Humphries also serves on several committees for organizations including the ASM Clinical Practices Committee, the CLSI AST Subcommittee, the CAP Microbiology Committee, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the World Health Organization.
